Dear All

next Thursday, April 29th, at 3pm, Dr. Ali Jawaid, who leads the Translational Research in Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TREND) lab at the Center of Neural Plasticity and Brain Disorders (BRAINCITY), will give a lecture entitled: Putting Brains on a Diet: Targeting Pathological Protein Aggregation and Neurodegeneration via Metabolism

Abstract

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) are two fatal neurodegenerative disorders with considerable clinical, pathological and genetic overlap. Pathological aggregation of TAR DNA binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) in neurons and glia is a molecular hall-mark of both ALS and FTLD. Intriguingly, our previous clinical studies showed that certain metabolic conditions, such as dyslipidemia, high body mass index, and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with better clinical outcomes in ALS and FTLD. This disease-modifying effect of metabolic factors in neurodegenerative disease seems to be an over-arching phenomenon also implicated in other neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer disease. Furthermore,  the effects of metabolic conditions in neurodegenerative disorders may also implicate non-neuronal cell types, such as microglia. Jawaid lab is currently focussed on investigating the effects of glucose and lipid metabolic cascades on aggregation and clearance of pathological protein deposits in neurodegenerative disorders with a key focus on TDP-43 and beta-amyloid.
