Professorial Nomination to Katarzyna Piwocka

On February 5th, 2025, The President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda has given the title of professor of natural sciences to dr. hab. Katarzyna Piwocka

Katarzyna Piwocka leads the Laboratory of Cytometry at the Nencki Institute and conducts research focusing on understanding the adaptive and protective mechanisms that cause resistance to treatment in myeloid leukemias. The long-term goal of her study is to identify new targets and new therapeutic strategies. Her current interest is centered on verifying the potential of a new combined therapeutic strategy targeting adaptative signaling pathways in leukemia and identifying previously unknown mechanisms of resistance and immunosuppression, based on intercellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment. Some of this research concerns intercellular cross-talk through extracellular vesicles and through direct transfer of proteins and organelles between different types of cells.
