Year 2018: 100 Years of the Nencki Institute

The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS began its activity in 1918 and is now one of the largest non-university centers of biological research in Poland. The year 2018 is therefore a special date in the Institute's history: we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Nencki Institute!

Celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute were initiated in 2016 by organizing several scientific conferences, including: Bilateral Meeting Nencki/University of Portsmouth, EMBO Imaging the Brain, Brain Tumors - from Biology to Therapy, Future of Aging and 4th MITOCHONDRION Meeting.

The year 2017 had another event that was entered in the calendar of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute, including: 2nd Nencki Symposium "Neurons in Action", Science Picnic "Popularization of Science - Science of Popularization", XIII International PTBUN Congress, Symposium/Workshops Art & Science "Bioimagine: Inspiration by Invisible World" organized at the Nencki Hydrobiological Station in Mikołajki and Łukasz Bożycki photographic exhibition "Soul Comes to Mind ".

Appreciating the role of prof. Jan Dembowski (1889-1963), the long-time director of the Nencki Institute, in the popularization of biological sciences, a reward in his name was established and given to the Institute's employees who were particularly active in disseminating knowledge. In addition, the name of prof. Jan Dembowski was given the Conference Room at the Hydrobiological Station in Mikołajki.

The commemorative medal for the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute was given to many scientific institutions and prominent researchers cooperating with the Nencki Institute PAN, members of the Scientific Council, research team leaders, current and former Institute employees, in recognition of their special merits for the development of the Institute, for supporting its activities, shaping the image and building a joint success.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute, the Institute's director asked the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, prof. Jerzy Duszyński, to apply to the President of the Republic of Poland for the award of state decorations and to the Minister of National Education - Medals of National Education for outstanding employees of the Institute. In the jubilee year, numerous events are scheduled for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute, about which we will keep you informed.
