Dear Colleagues,
we would like to cordially invite you to the upcoming Brain Imaging Meeting organized by Laboratory of Brain Imaging (LOBI) and Laboratory of Language Neurobiology (LLN).
The seminar will take place on Wednesday 07.12.2022 at 3:00 PM, at the Neurobiology Center (the first floor) or online under the link bellow.
During the meeting Michał Bola, PhD, DSc (Laboratory of Brain Imaging, Nencki Institute, Warsaw, Poland) will present a talk entitled:
How is pre-stimulus alpha-band activity related to perception? Evidence from 5 paradigms and 484 experimental sessions.
Abstract:
Even though our intuition suggests we perceive the external world in a very reliable and veridical manner, ample evidence suggests that perception is in fact strongly dependent on the functional state of the brain. For instance, studies presenting stimuli at perceptual threshold demonstrate that our ability to detect the same stimulus changes on a trial-by-trial basis. It is now well established that electrophysiological activity in the alpha-band (7-14 Hz) gates perception of threshold stimuli and a recently published Baseline Sensory Excitability Model (Samaha et al., 2020, TICS) put forward a specific perceptual and neurophysiological mechanism accounting for the reported alpha-band effects. In the present study we aimed to test models’ main predictions by investigating how pre-stimulus alpha-band activity affects both objective and subjective aspects of perception. To this end we designed 5 paradigms and conducted 484 experimental sessions during which behavioral and EEG data was collected. In all paradigms simple (Gabor patches) or complex (face or scene images) visual stimuli were presented at perceptual threshold, and participants performed tasks measuring objective discrimination accuracy and subjective vividness of perceptual experience. In my talk I will present preliminary results of the project and discuss what insights into the relation between alpha-band activity and perception they provide, particularly in the context of Baseline Sensory Excitability Model.
