Nencki Institute at the FEBS Congress in Krakow

The 44th Congress of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (The 44th FEBS Congress) took place in Krakow, from the  6th to 11th July 2019. FEBS is one of the most important European scientific organizations in the field of biochemical sciences, with over 36,000 members associated in 35 national societies. The FEBS Congress was held in Poland for the third time (earlier in 1966 and 2004 in Warsaw - the latter in 2004 chaired by Jolanta Barańska from the Nencki Institute).  The FEBS Congress in Krakow was an event of exceptional scientific importance on a European scale.

The Congress was organized by the Polish Biochemical Society (PTBioch), and was attended by 1,825 people (including several dozen people from the Nencki Institute) from 54 countries. During the Congress, 142 plenary/session lectures, and 76 short oral presentations, were given. Among the plenary lecturers, there were two Nobel Prize laureates: Andrew Fire and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan. Young scientists presented 1,305 posters. The congress was attended by 31 exhibitors: companies producing equipment, publishing houses, and scientific organizations, including the Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The scientific programme of the Congress was created, among others, by a large group of researchers from the Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Scientific sessions of the Congress were organized by: prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyń ("Signal transduction"), prof. Leszek Kaczmarek ("Molecular neurobiology"), prof. Bożena Kamińska ("Signaling in brain cancer"), prof. Ewa Sikora ("Molecular biology of aging"), prof. Joanna Szczepanowska ("Single cell analysis and imaging"), and prof. Adam Szewczyk - Vice-chairman of the organizational committee ("Intracellular ion channels and transporters"). Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, welcomed all the participants of the Congress during the 'Opening Ceremony'.

The Congress took place in one of the most beautiful European congress centers: The ICE Krakow Congress Centre, and the direct organizer was the PCO "Targi w Krakowie" company. According to the unanimous opinion of the participants, the FEBS Congress in Krakow, was a scientific and organizational success.
