On 14 May 2024, the Polish Space Agency announced that the European Space Agency (ESA) had signed seven contracts with Polish institutions and companies to conduct experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).

Research within one of the experiments selected for implementation will be carried out at the Nencki Institute. This is the Space Volcanic Algae project of Extremo Technologies, which aims to test the ability of extremophilic volcanic microalgae to survive and adapt to space conditions. This will be important for future space missions and closed-loop and space medicine applications.

Under this project, the Nencki Institute will perform bioimaging of extremophilic volcanic microalgae cell ultrastructure before and after the mission.
The Space Volcanic Algae experiment coordinator is Dr Hanna Nieznańska - head of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory.

The research will be carried out using the BioPixel infrastructure, financed by MEiN within the framework of the Operational Programme Intelligent Development 2014-2020, Measure 4.2-Development of Modern Research Infrastructure of the Science Sector, from the European Regional Development Fund (contract number: POIR.04.02.00-00-C004/19).
