Nencki Institute Seminar

Dear All

It’s is my great pleasure to invite you to the next Nencki Institute seminar, on the 15th of April at 3pm.

The format will be a bit unusual – we will hear a lecture from two young researchers, both from the Grzegorz Sumara's labs. Dr. Katarzyna Kolczyńska-Matysiak from Dioscuri Center for Metabolic Diseases at Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology and Till Karwen, a PhD student at Rudolf-Virchow-Zentrum - Center for Integrative and Translational Bioimaging, University of Würzburg, will discuss their discoveries on new facete of platelet functions in a presentation entitled: Platelets control the function of pancreatic β cells

Abstract

Platelets are small anucleate blood cells responsible for blood coagulation upon injury. The dense and α granules of platelets store multiple factors implicated in the regulation of glucose and lipid homeostasis. However, the role of the platelet-derived endocrine factors in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis remains enigmatic. We showed that platelets permanently localize to the vascular endothelium of the pancreatic β cell islets and can be sub-activated in response to glucose. Genetic and pharmacological ablation of platelets as well as platelets’ adhesion, degranulation and activation result in impaired glucose tolerance and decreased insulin levels in rodents. Importantly, platelet-derived factors can stimulate insulin secretion in mouse, rat, and human β cells. Our findings identify an unexpected and evolutionarily conserved function of platelets in the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism by pancreatic β cells.
