Prof. Adam Szewczyk Elected President of the Polish Biochemical Society

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Adam Szewczyk from the Nencki Institute has been elected President of the Polish Biochemical Society (PTBioch) for the XXIII term 2026–2029.

The election took place on September 17th during the General Assembly of PTBioch members, held as part of the VI BIO2025 Congress in the Collegium Politicum Auditorium at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

The Polish Biochemical Society, established in 1958, is a nationwide organization that brings together scientists working in biochemistry and related fields. The Society supports the development of scientific research and education by organizing conferences and training sessions, as well as publishing the journals "Acta Biochimica Polonica" and "Postępy Biochemii" (Advances in Biochemistry). It also represents the Polish biochemical community internationally, collaborating with organizations such as FEBS and IUBMB.

Prof. Adam Szewczyk (born December 24, 1960, in Wrocław) is a professor of biological sciences specializing in bioenergetics and mitochondrial biology. A graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Warsaw (1984), he obtained his PhD at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS, where he completed his habilitation in 1998 and was awarded a professorship in 2004. He heads the Laboratory of Intracellular Ion Channels at the Nencki Institute and, from 2008 to 2018, was the Director of the Institute.

His research focuses on mitochondrial ion channels, their role in regulating cellular function, and potential practical applications. He is the author of over 160 scientific publications cited more than 6,800 times and has supervised numerous doctoral dissertations. He has been a fellow at foreign universities, including the University of Bern, Université de Nice – Sophia Antipolis, and Johns Hopkins University. Prof. Szewczyk has held many positions in scientific institutions in Poland and abroad, including membership in the Executive Committee of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). He is a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 2022). In 2017, he was honored with a FEBS Honorary Diploma for his contributions to the Federation, and in 2025, he was included in the "World Top 2% Scientists" ranking.
