Nencki Institute Seminar

Dear All

I would like to invite you to the next Nencki Institute Seminar which will take place on the 20th of October, as usual at 3pm in the CN hall.

We will host dr. Paweł Dłotko, who is leading the Dioscuri Centre in Topological Data Analysis at the Mathematical Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Pawel will give a lecture entitled: Shapes in biology - how mathematics helps to quantify information about structure of data.

Abstract:

Mathematics, while mostly dealing with numbers, can also quantify other important concepts: shapes. In this talk I will provide a short introduction to the tools of topological data analysis and show how they can be used to analyze biological data. We will start by presenting various topological descriptors of embedded trees and use them to classify shapes and function of neuronal cells.,Then we will move to descriptors of porosity of bones and show how they can help in quantifying various diseases, for instance osteoporosis, based on clinical CT, micro-CT and synchrotrone based data. We will then move to abstract descriptors of histological images and models of multi-dimensional micro-array-based data. When discussing those applications I will describe the main idea of the tools that, hopeful, you can find useful in your work.

Short bio:

Paweł has graduated from computational mathematics at Jagiellonian University in 2012. Subsequently he worked as a researcher in the University of Pennsylvania, Inria Saclay and Swansea University. Paweł established his Dioscuri Centre in 2020. Paweł's main interest is to provide mathematically rigorous tools for researchers in other sciences. He and his group are actively developing new and efficient topological methods to analyze various aspects of the shape of data.
