Gloria Artis Silver Medal for Merit to Culture for prof. Jerzy Duszyński

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński from the Nencki Institute has been awarded the Gloria Artis Silver Medal for Merit to Culture. The award ceremony took place on 12 December 2025 at the National Ossolinski Institute. The medal was presented to Professor Duszyński by Marta Cienkowska, Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

This distinction is granted for distinguished contributions to, or protection of Polish culture and national heritage.

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński is a distinguished Polish scientist and popularizer of scientific knowledge. He served as President of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 2015 to 2022, as Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education from 2007 to 2008, and as Director of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS from 2003 to 2008. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Gold Cross of Merit (1993), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2010), the Order of Academic Palms (France, 2022), and the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun – Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon (2024).

Since 2021, Prof. Duszyński has chaired the Board of Curators of the Ossoliński National Institute. Following the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine, he actively supported libraries in Lviv and Kyiv operating within the structure of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In recognition of these efforts, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2023.
