Title: Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (fMRS) Study on Reading-Related Metabolite Changes

Abstract:

Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (fMRS) is a non-invasive technique used to measure changes in metabolite concentrations in response to various stimuli. This study aimed to measure glutamate (Glu), the main excitatory neurotransmitter, in response to reading-related stimulation in two brain regions: the left superior temporal sulcus (STS), involved in reading, and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a control region. Visual stimuli included words in Polish and false font strings.

fMRS data were acquired with four time delays between stimulus onset and signal acquisition (500 ms, 1000 ms, 3000 ms, 4500 ms). Data were collected from adolescents aged 15-24, with 59 participants on a 7T scanner and 40 participants on a 3T scanner, including individuals with dyslexia and typical readers.

Results showed a significant interaction between stimulus type (words in Polish, false font strings, rest) and sex on the 7T scanner in both brain regions, which was not observed on the 3T scanner. Interestingly, no significant differences in Glu levels were found between participants with dyslexia and typical readers in STS. Furthermore, no consistent Glu response function could be identified across the time delays, with results varying by sex, stimulus type, and scanner.
