On Thursday (26.02) we will host Prof. Erwin Van Vliet (University of Amsterdam). His lecture will be entitled: "At the crossroads of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease: investigating the role of LRP1 in the cerebral vasculature". The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. in the CN lecture hall and it will be followed by a get together.

This lecture discusses how loss of cerebrovascular LRP1 at the blood–brain barrier may link epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease by impairing amyloid‑β clearance, promoting vascular dysfunction, gliosis, inflammation, neuronal loss, and ultimately cognitive decline and hyperexcitability.

Dr. Erwin van Vliet received his PhD in 2007, and he is an associate professor of Neuroscience at the Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences, Center for Neuroscience, University of Amsterdam. Furthermore, he is the programme director of the bachelor's programme in Psychobiology at the University of Amsterdam and has been appointed as a senior scientist at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, in the department of Neuropathology.

His research centers on the mechanisms underlying epilepsy, with a particular focus on neuroinflammation, blood–brain barrier dysfunction, and the neurovascular unit in health, aging, and disease. Using preclinical and translational approaches, he investigates epileptogenesis and develops biomarkers and targets for improved diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders, including epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. van Vliet has authored numerous publications in leading neuroscience and neurology journals and contributes actively to international collaborative initiatives in translational epilepsy research.
